Who are we?

TGP Introduction
The Greyhound Project, Inc. is a volunteer, non-profit organization providing information about and promoting the adoption of retired racing Greyhounds. Our purpose is to serve the common interests of greyhound adoption organizations, their volunteers, and others interested in the welfare of retired racing Greyhounds on a national basis. We are not affiliated with any Greyhound adoption program or organization.

The Greyhound Project, Inc. was founded in the summer of 1992. We are all greyhound adopters, and several of us have been deeply involved with local adoption groups. When we organized, we decided that the adoption movement could use information rather than another adoption group, so that has been our goal.

Our Mission Statement

The mission of The Greyhound Project, Inc. is to promote the welfare and adoption of greyhounds by providing support and information to adoption organizations, adopters, and the public.

What do we do?

Celebrating Greyhounds - The Magazine

Celebrating Greyhounds is a quarterly publication for Greyhound adopters, owners, and friends. Made possible through the cooperative efforts of individuals and Greyhound adoption organizations, it is published under the auspices of The Greyhound Project. Two copies are sent free of charge to every adoption group in the world. Those with an interest in Greyhounds, Greyhound adoptions, sighthounds, or any dog, will find interesting information here.

Celebrating Greyhounds desk and wall calendars

Featuring adopted retired racing Greyhounds placed by adoption groups around the country the calendars are intended to illustrate the qualities of the dogs as pets and companions in their "second career." They aim to acknowledge and celebrate the hard work and dedication of everyone interested in the welfare of the dogs after they have finished racing as well as the considerable success that has been achieved in finding homes for the dogs.

Supporting Greyhound cancer research

Morris Animal Foundation
The Greyhound Project, Inc. has set aside $2500 as a matching fund for donations to Morris Animal Foundation for canine cancer studies. Just think about it for a minute...up to a total of $2500, we will match your contributions, and if your employer participates in a matching program with its employees, the impact of your dollars is tripled. Since Morris Animal Foundation is a 501(c)3 organization, all contributions are tax deductible to the full extent of the law. Every dollar will go to fund canine cancer studies; not a cent goes to administrative or other expenses.

Adoption Group Resource Directory

When The Greyhound Project launched, it was unclear how many adoption groups existed around the country. A number of resources listed groups, but none were all-inclusive. Putting all of the information together in one place proved to be a useful tool for supporting adoption efforts.

The information in the Directory has been instrumental in organizing large scale relocation of surplus dogs from closed tracks throughout the country and continues to be used to arrange outlets for excess greyhounds. The Directory currently lists approximately 300 adoption groups
